Navratri – The 9 Divine Forms of Maa Durga and Their Spiritual Powers
6 June 2026
A complete guide to the nine forms of Maa Durga worshipped during Navratri, their mantras, colors and the blessings each grants.
Navratri celebrates the nine divine forms of Maa Durga across nine sacred nights, culminating on Vijayadashami — the victory of good over evil. Each form represents a unique shakti and is invoked on a specific day with a specific color, prasad, and mantra.
Along with Ekadashi and Tulsi worship, Navratri is one of the most powerful observances for spiritual transformation and receiving the grace of the Divine Mother.
The Four Navratris in a Year
Most people know only Sharad Navratri, but there are actually four Navratris each year:
- Chaitra Navratri (March-April) — Spring Navratri. Marks the beginning of the Hindu new year. Ends with Ram Navami (birthday of Lord Ram).
- Sharad Navratri (September-October) — Autumn Navratri. The most famous and widely celebrated. Ends with Vijayadashami/Dussehra.
- Magha Navratri (January-February) — Winter Navratri. Also called "Gupt Navratri" (secret Navratri). Mostly observed in North India.
- Ashadha Navratri (June-July) — Monsoon Navratri. Also called "Gupt Navratri." Observed during the rainy season.
Each Navratri has a unique tantric significance. The Gupt Navratris are especially important for practitioners of tantra and those seeking specific siddhis (spiritual powers).

How to Observe Navratri
Daily Practices
- Wake up during Brahma Muhurta (before sunrise) and take a bath
- Light an Akhand Jyoti — a continuously burning lamp for all 9 days. Use a cotton wick and ghee or mustard oil. Never let it go out.
- Wear the color of the day — each day has a specific color (see above). Wearing it aligns your energy with that day's deity.
- Recite Durga Saptashati — the 700-verse hymn to Durga, or at least the Argala Stotra and Devi Kavacham
- Perform puja — offer flowers, incense, fruits, and prasad to the Goddess
- Chant mantras — "Om Aim Hrim Klim Chamundayai Vichche" is the universal Durga mantra
- Maintain sattvic diet — no onion, garlic, meat, eggs, alcohol
- Observe brahmacharya — celibacy or conscious restraint for all 9 days
Kanya Pujan (Ashtami or Navami)
On the 8th or 9th day, perform kanya pujan: worship 9 young girls (pre-puberty) representing the 9 forms of Durga. The ritual:
- Invite 9 girls (and optionally 1 boy representing Bhairav) to your home
- Wash their feet — this is the highest form of respect
- Apply tilak to their foreheads
- Tie a sacred thread (moli) on their wrists
- Offer them a meal — traditionally halwa (semolina pudding), puri (fried bread), and chana (chickpeas)
- Give them gifts — small items like bangles, handkerchiefs, or money (dakshina)
- Take their blessings by touching their feet
