Ekadashi Vrat – Significance, Rules and Spiritual Benefits
6 June 2026
Ekadashi falls twice a month and is the most powerful vrat for Lord Vishnu's devotees. Learn its rules, fasting method and spiritual rewards.
Ekadashi Vrat is observed on the 11th lunar day (tithi) of both the bright (Shukla) and dark (Krishna) fortnights — twice every month. It is dedicated to Lord Vishnu and Goddess Lakshmi, and the Padma Purana declares that one Ekadashi observed with full devotion destroys the sins of a thousand lifetimes.
Along with Navratri and Tulsi Puja, Ekadashi is one of the most powerful observances in the Hindu spiritual calendar.
Why We Fast on Ekadashi
On the 11th tithi, the moon's gravitational pull affects the fluid balance in the brain and intestines. Fasting on this day reduces ama (toxins), sharpens the mind for sadhana, and aligns the body with cosmic rhythm. The science behind this has been recognized not only by rishis but also by modern chronobiologists who study the moon's effect on human physiology.
The 24 Ekadashis of the Year
Each Ekadashi has its own unique name, story, and spiritual benefit:
- Putrada Ekadashi (two in a year) — Bestows the blessing of children
- Mokshada Ekadashi — Grants liberation from the cycle of birth and death
- Vaikuntha Ekadashi — The most sacred, opens the gates of Vaikuntha, Vishnu's divine abode
- Nirjala Ekadashi (Jyeshtha Shukla) — The most powerful, observed without even water
- Devshayani Ekadashi (Ashadha Shukla) — Marks the beginning of Chaturmas, when Vishnu goes to sleep
- Devuthani Ekadashi (Kartik Shukla) — Marks Vishnu's awakening and the end of Chaturmas
- Yogini Ekadashi — Removes the effects of past sins and negative karma
- Kamada Ekadashi — Fulfills all righteous desires

Advanced Practice: Nirjala Ekadashi
Nirjala means "without water." On Nirjala Ekadashi (in the month of Jyeshtha), advanced sadhakas observe a complete fast without even water. This single fast is said to give the merit of all 24 Ekadashis combined. However, this should only be attempted by those in good health and with prior fasting experience.
How to Break the Fast (Parana)
Parana is the ceremonial breaking of the fast, performed on Dwadashi (the 12th day) morning within a specific time window called Parana Muhurat. The rules are:
- Wake up early on Dwadashi morning and bathe
- Offer bhog (food offering) to Lord Vishnu — typically fruits, milk, or kheer
- Perform Vishnu Sahasranama or simple prayers
- Break your fast with tulsi water or a few tulsi leaves
- Eat a light sattvic meal — avoid heavy, oily, or spicy food
- Donate food or money to a brahmin or feed a cow before eating your first meal
The Parana window is usually short (2-3 hours after sunrise). If you miss it, you may wait until the next sunrise or consult a priest for guidance.
What to Do on Ekadashi
- Wake up during Brahma Muhurta (before sunrise)
- Take a bath — cold water is preferred, but warm is acceptable in winter
- Chant Gayatri Mantra and Vishnu mantras
- Recite or listen to Vishnu Sahasranama (1000 names of Vishnu)
- Read the specific katha (story) of that Ekadashi
- Sing bhajans and kirtan dedicated to Vishnu and Lakshmi
- Perform japa using a Tulsi mala
- Stay awake at night if possible (jagran) — at least until midnight
- Visit a Vishnu or Lakshmi temple if accessible
- Spend time in silence and meditation
Mantras to Chant on Ekadashi
- Om Namo Bhagavate Vasudevaya — 108 times or more
- Om Namo Narayanaya — continuous chanting throughout the day
- Om Shreem Lakshmi Narayanaya Namah — for abundance and grace
- Vishnu Sahasranama — at least once in the morning
- Hanuman Chalisa — to remove obstacles in observing the fast
Who Should Not Fast on Ekadashi
While Ekadashi is beneficial for most, certain individuals should modify the fast:
- Children below 8 years — may keep a fruit-only fast
- Elders above 80 years — may eat light, sattvic food once
- Pregnant women — should keep phalahar (fruit-only) fast, never nirjala
- Nursing mothers — need nutrition for milk production; consult a doctor and priest
- Diabetics and those with medical conditions — always consult your doctor before fasting
- Those recovering from surgery or illness — focus on healing, not fasting
For those who cannot fast completely, even observing a partial fast (avoiding grains and non-veg) while focusing on prayer and chanting brings great benefit.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I drink water on Ekadashi?
Yes, on regular Ekadashis, water is permitted. Some even take milk and fruits. Only Nirjala Ekadashi is observed without water, and that is once a year.
What if I accidentally eat grain on Ekadashi?
Don't worry. Immediately stop, pray for forgiveness, and continue the fast with renewed intention. The Divine looks at your sincerity, not perfection.
Can I work on Ekadashi?
Yes, normal work is permitted. However, try to avoid stressful activities, arguments, and heavy physical labor. Use the day for spiritual focus even while working.
Is Ekadashi only for Vaishnavas?
While Ekadashi is especially dear to Vaishnavas, anyone can observe it. The benefits — physical detox, mental clarity, and spiritual upliftment — are universal.
